Scanning In Batch Mode
During scanning questionnaires which cause scanning to halt can be dealt with on an individual basis (see Halts in Scanning) or all together at the end of scanning which is referred to as scanning in batch mode.
To scan in batch mode requires the setting of an application flag (see Halt Scan Application Defaults).
At the end of scanning in batch mode a list of those questionnaires rejected and reasons for their rejection are listed to the screen and can be optionally printed out.
Rectifying the anomalous questionnaires can be done in one of three ways
Rescan, but not in batch mode, and edit details interactively on screen.
Amend the questionnaire physically (rubbing out smudges or properly completing badly filling in marks).
Transcibe the marks to a clean questionnaire and replace the anomalous one.
Clearly this approach is only meaningful if the scanner in use has the ability to separate questionnaires into two stacks, those which were accepted and the data written away and those which were rejected. Otherwise trying to identify the rejected questionnaires which are still mixed in with those accepted will be a very tedious and laborious task.
