Whilst we will endeavour to do our best to help our users diagnose a fault with an input device (usually an OMR), Speedwell is not responsible for providing hardware maintenance. Hardware maintenance agreements may be taken out on an annual basis with the manufacturer or an agent acting on their behalf. Alternatively hardware faults may be fixed on a 'per call out' or 'return to supplier' basis.
![]() In general OMRs are very reliable and actual hardware failures are quite uncommon. Most of the calls received by our help desk relate to the communication between the pc and the reader. Typically these 'faults' will be reported when the reader has been moved or is attached to attached to a different pc, or when the software has been reinstalled. If you receive the error message 'Scanner not responding', this indicates that there is something wrong with the communications and would not normally suggest that there is a hardware fault. Standard Speedwell systems involving scanning enable the user to configure communications through the software and allows users to select the type of scanner being used, the speed of data transmission (baud rate) and which 'serial communications port' (1 or 2) is being used. NB The correct scanner must always be selected in the software. To make changes to OMR and the communications settings click on 'Options' and then either 'Configure OMR' or 'Configure Communications'. Help files are available in Speedwell's standard software products. The communication settings held in the scanner (NCS and Scantron) and the serial communications port being used must be set to those selected in the software. Instructions on how to set the scanner settings may be found in the appropriate manufacturer's operations manual. With DRS readers the speed of data transmission is done dynamically, although care must be taken to choose the correct communication port. |
